    GEOCAL overview

GEOCAL is a geometric camera calibration device that uses a beam-expanded laser in combination with a diffractive optical element (DOE).

    Application Context

Geometric camera calibration is essential for imaging systems in industries such as automotive, ADAS, and security, where accurate object detection in dynamic scenes is required. After calibration, camera systems can measure distances more reliably, detect objects more accurately, and compensate for geometric distortion, particularly in wide-field-of-view configurations. It also enables precise alignment of stereo camera pairs.

    Advantages of GEOCAL

Conventional geometric calibration methods rely on printed test charts with regular patterns, which must be scaled to match field of view and working distance. In addition, many setups require relay lenses when compact designs or infinity-based calibration are needed.

GEOCAL eliminates the need for test charts and relay lenses, while enabling high-precision measurement of geometric distortion, intrinsic and extrinsic parameters, and stereo camera alignment. It can also be used without external illumination.

    GEOCAL XL

    GEOCAL XL

In addition to the standard GEOCAL, we also offer the GEOCAL XL. This version has a significantly larger output window with a usable aperture of Ø 155 mm as opposed to the standard Ø 77 mm. The GEOCAL XL is ideal for geometric calibration of cameras with large front lenses and for applications where the distance between the camera and GEOCAL is long (e.g., calibrating through a windshield).

    GEOCAL IR

    GEOCAL IR

The GEOCAL IR version extends the laser diode wavelength range to 935 nm, enabling geometric camera calibration in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum. It has the same physical dimensions as the standard GEOCAL.

    GEOCAL Evaluation Software

    GEOCAL Evaluation Software

GEOCAL includes standalone software with a graphical user interface (GUI) for evaluating test results. An API is also available, enabling integration of GEOCAL functionality into custom software, production line solutions, or device testing applications. Both the software and API are compatible with GEOCAL XL. For more information on the API, please contact our sales team.

    Use Cases

    Typical application areas

    IEEE-2020 measurements

GEOCAL is suitable for geometric camera calibration as defined in IEEE-2020 measurement standards. In ADAS applications, camera systems must accurately map the observed scene to ensure reliable perception and control. This requires precise geometric calibration to maintain measurement accuracy.

    Lens distortion correction

In applications such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and driver/occupant monitoring systems (DMS/OMS), lens distortion can affect the accuracy of camera-based perception. Accurate measurement and correction of distortion is therefore required to ensure reliable image interpretation.GEOCAL provides precise calibration data that can be combined with image processing frameworks such as OpenCV to correct distortion in captured images.

    Important compatibility note

The laser wavelength of standard GEOCAL and GEOCAL XL has been updated from 633 nm to 638 nm.
All standard GEOCAL units from GC-10045 and all GEOCAL XL units from GC-XL-10013 onwards use the updated wavelength.

Software version 1.4.1 includes default configuration files for GEOCAL systems with a 633 nm wavelength. If your system uses a 638 nm laser, the configuration files must be updated accordingly.
